How do you know its a Ndebele name/word and how do you know they translate it as "to see"? It could be translated as "Bona" meaning "them" or bona as "see" meaning "you see!"

Kuthiwa ngu"Bhona " ngendlela abalibiza ngayo and clearly that is not a Ndebele word or name; this has nothing to do with the Ndebele langauge, it is just his late mother's name.

Even if it's a Ndebele word a name will never change Mugave's hatrage of uMthwakazi he has proven it beyond doubt several tymz ukuthi uyasizonda and nathi asidingwe kuthandwa nguye we also hat him even all those ndebelez abaku ZANU nabo bayamzonda only that they are cowards

Whoever asked this question does not know Mugabe's history.Bona is the name of Mugabe's mother. whose surname was Tshuma.Mugabe was born in a polygamous marriage and one of his step mother was Ndebele. As for Grace her middle name is Ntombizodwa and she was born in South-Africa.
Anonymous user 12 years
Bantu Mugabe's mother was a Shona named Bona and when his father went to Bulawayo, he fell in love with MaTshuma who was Mugabe's stepmother- a Ndebele. Rumour has it that MaTshuma was related to John Nkomo from Tsholotsho hence Mugabe's fascination with 'ngale eTsholotsho", the home of his step mother.
As for Grace Ntombizodwa Marufu, she is a South African national by birth as her father (a Shona from (I forget the place along the Harare-Masvingo Road) lived in SA by the time she was born. They then moved to Zimbabwe

But Bona is also latin for 'good'. Bona was his mother's name. His mother passed for a faithful catholic. I am sure that is where it came from.

Lomuntu osuka aphongu thethisa abantu angabaziyo uzalwa ngaphi?KasilolaShona lomuntu coz maShona chaiwo anetsika dzakanaka.Lizalizelwe yini lomuntu.Ubone bani othethise anybody here.Mugabe has Ngwenya relatives in South-Africa.He taught in Matabeleland for four years, was educated at Fort-Hare University. His father once worked in Byo where he married a Tshuma woman who was Mugabe's step mother.Grace's middle name is Ntombizodwa, even if her father is Shona, she was born in SA.Mugabe can speak Ndebele fluently, even better than most Ndebeles.

Mugabe is clever. He will kill the Ndebele and then pacify them by giving his children Ndebele names and nicknames, pretending that everything is OK. A lot of Ndebele have been hooked to such a philosophy, that is why they have no interest in setting themselves free. They scream murder against the old fox but go on to look for izimota ezibethe amaviri and diamond proceeds to outdo one another in excessive bootlicking of all the abazukulu bempumalanga in umgakla, umathanyela, lomthambala mpela! Kude phambili!

Bona is used in many languages other than Ndebele, only he mugabe can tell what his bona means
Anonymous user 12 years
No!!!! people should stop running away from the truth. BONA is Ndebele and it means SEE, PERIOD! There is no such a thing as BHONA, because that is meaningless - even in the Shona languages. The influence of the Ndebele in the thirties, fourties, fifties, sixties and seventies in the then Rhodesia made many Shona people adopt Mthwakazi names. The gravitas which the Ndebele people always had made the white colonialist to grudgingly admire them, even as they practised racism against them. Inevitably as such, the whites propped up the Ndebele and somewhat looked down upon the Shona. This is why Ndebele names and words are so widespread among the Shona, even where they have no Ndebele relatives. Names like Dudu, Mandisa, Themba, Jabu are common. Not forgetting Mdara (Mdala); Mpfana (Mfana); Jahaa (Jaha/Insizwa); Mbhofana (Mpofana). Just to prove that all these words and names are of Ndebele origin - try investigating their meaning among the Shona - they will not tell you, because they don't know. Its only in Ndebele that they do find a meaning. The word SHONA is one good example of a word the Shona people are so proud of as a collective term to describe themselves, but they all don't know what it means and it does not exist in any of their dialects, except in Ndebele; which means to "disappear". You should never be misled by these claims about the words being Latin this, foreign word this or that. How can it be so, when Latin was very foreign to both Rhodesia nad Zimbabwe. Why look so far when there is the Ndebele/Xhosa/Swati/Zulu languages just next door that easily explain these words? How can a people be influenced by languages and cultures that are from far afield, yet ther are languages and cultures with similar names and words just next door? Is it because of an inferiority complex that says white influence is more superior than black cultural influence? Please GROW UP and lets all celebrate being African. There is nothing wrong with borrowing from each other, its part of the evolution of languages. It is also now common for Mthwakazi people to use the term "KWANISA", which is Shona but has now been Ndebelelised in many cases!!!

i have read all that you people are saying. what pains me the most is this gut who is swearing and the others also who say tribal staff. My daughter has a greek name, l dont know anyone who is greek. so lets just suppose its a ndebele name, it will never change how he feels abt ndebeles. you can give ur dog a name like ticaona, it doesnt mean you hate your dog.you can call your dog sabelo and stil love your dog. all im saying is such topics makes people to quarrel. there are things that we can not change, as a new generation with learned people l would expect that we live all the tribal talk and face the reality. if us ndebeles stop thinking negetively abt ourselves and if shonas stop thinking that this is their country, we can built a better place for ourselves. look at SA, how many tribes are there but they manage to live peacefully one talks in his/her launguage without being tormented abt it. when l was in byo l got in a taxi and there were shona speaking peple inside having a good conversation with ndebele people, they spoke in shona and the ndebeles were speaking in ndebele and when the shona guys were dropping off they told the driver in shona and he stopped exactly where they wanted. l went to hre,me and my sister we were talking and this other man on my side said this is not byo even when l said to the taxi driver ngicela ukusala ungakhona he didnt stop and said he doesnt understand ndebele.really?in this day and age.all im saying is if the whites can let obama be a president, why cant we as blacks let go of the tribes and work together to better our lives.Bona is what the president and his wife think it means.

Bona's full name is BonaOuma derived from her parternal grandmother's name, it is a Spanish/Latin name meaning "Grand Mother" so while we may want to curse at mugabe for hating ndebeles but giving his daughter a ndebele name we are not on the right track. siyaphambanisa impela.

i don't agree that Mugabe is hatred man but its all about political and Historical mechanism.
As sotho i think Ndebele will claim hatred not only to Mugabe from each and every one who challenge them,Historical NDEBELE are known for claiming and to dominate to other clans or tribes,i did read many atticles about Mugabe and Grace 's Ndebele blood mixtures ,inthat moment i think Mugabe and his family they deserves much connection to any clan or tribe as their rights of freedom .
As Mugabe gave his daughter a Ndebele Name Bona its clearly thaught us that he is not a hatred man as he was labeled ,Mugabe's Ndebele hatrage claim its all about political reasons, thats need much calm in sotho's culture of approach and envolvement.
Thank you.
